These posts can be status updates, photos, videos, links and now, Facebook Live videos. We rolled out Facebook Live on iOS in December and last week we began rolling it out on Android in the US. Over the last three months Facebook Live video has become more and more popular and more and more people and Pages are creating and watching live videos.

As with any new type of content in News Feed, we are learning what signals help us show you the most relevant Facebook Live videos for you personally. For example, a few years ago when more people began sharing and watching video on Facebook we listened to feedback to learn what signals helped us show people more of the videos they want to see and fewer of the videos they don’t. At first we updated News Feed ranking to take into account how many people watched a video and how long people watched for to help us personalize News Feed based on people’s preference for watching video. Over time we also learned that certain actions people take on a video, such as choosing to turn on sound or making the video full screen, are good signs they wanted to see that video, even if they didn’t choose to like it.

Now that more and more people are watching Live videos, we are considering Live Videos as a new content type – different from normal videos – and learning how to rank them for people in News Feed. As a first step, we are making a small update to News Feed so that Facebook Live videos are more likely to appear higher in News Feed when those videos are actually live, compared to after they are no longer live. People spend more than 3x more time watching a Facebook Live video on average compared to a video that’s no longer live. This is because Facebook Live videos are more interesting in the moment than after the fact.

What does this mean for my Page?

Facebook Live is currently available for verified Pages and public figures using Mentions. Through user feedback, we realized that we needed to establish a channel for users to alert us to our mistakes. We eventually launched an appeals form for age-restrictions, and just recently launched an appeals form for videos rejected due to policy violations. For this, we’re sorry and we strive to do better by you, our community.

The good news is that the feedback you’ve raised in comments and videos on YouTube and beyond is having an impact. It’s led us to create a team dedicated to minimizing mistakes and improving the quality of our actions. And it’s encouraged us to roll out some initiatives in the coming months that will help strengthen communications between creators and YouTube support. We’ll also make improvements to increase transparency into the status of monetization claims. The year started on a high note with the rapid explosion of live video, the excitement of SXSW, and the launch of Twitter’s Periscope. But over the year, it became rougher waters — mobile broadcast video hasn’t quite exploded as quickly as we’d hoped. The distribution advantages of Twitter/Periscope and Facebook Live drew more early users to them away from us and we were not able to grow as quickly alongside as we had planned. Among our many investments in that time, we built a few key features we believed could help us differentiate and bring new live content to life including Developers API, our GoPro integration last August (first ever live streaming!) and our Cameo feature which brought watchers into the live broadcast.

I want to share a few thoughts on what our team believes has been happening in the live video space over the past year, as well as some decisions we have made to focus the company for our best opportunity going forward. We are investing in a new product that we think addresses some of the challenges and furthers our vision of bringing mobile live video to everyone the world.

While live video has become an interesting feature on top of Twitter and Facebook, it hasn’t yet developed into a self-sustaining new network as we hoped we would do with Meerkat. Our assumption was that by reducing broadcaster’s cost to broadcast to zero (no equipment, etc) we would be able to create a whole new class of live broadcasters like YouTube did with video and YouTubers. We always believed that it would take a lot of time, but we hoped we’d see more positive signs a year later. One thing we have learned is there is a very high emotional cost to being entertaining in a live format, and bringing on enough of a live audience to make it worthwhile is challenging too.

So far, the value proposition of being live is just not clear to people who are not celebrities/media/news. If you are one of them (and particularly if you have an existing audience on Facebook or Twitter), there is clear value in occasionally going live as a new way to bring content to your audience or interact with them. This is especially true around existing live events with behind the scenes content, etc. But for most regular people — it has been hard to figure out when or even why to go live. It’s different than sharing photographs — think of it this way: before Instagram, people already knew what constituted a beautiful photo and tried to take them. With live video no one really knows what “good” live video they can create is.

Given all of this, 1-to-many mobile live video is still in a state of infancy and a lot of its success depends on these media, stars, or influencers. Their main currency is audience and viewership. As long as we are competing on those with Twitter/Periscope and Facebook Live, we don’t think the current Meerkat product is set up to win. All of these platforms are struggling to create repeat broadcasters at a growing rate and the viewership isn’t much higher today than we thought it was last summer. With a large media team and paying content rights, we believe we could have kept attracting audience at some levels, (we had some great moments with YouTubers like Michelle Phan, exclusive content like Discovery Channel Shark Week, and even made for Meerkat shows by publishers such as Hulu, The Weather Channel, and TMZ) but it didn’t feel sustainable. Facebook and Twitter were able to leverage their advantages here.

There is a bright spot to all of this. We found the best Meerkat moments happened when people who knew each other (either in person or online) came together live and interacted in realtime. We saw this in the conversations when the threads would go on and on and on. We especially saw this in cameo when broadcasters were able to see their audience and interact in a more human way, people passed around the camera for a campfire chat session. And we saw many of these groups have the best repeat behavior of anyone.

With the support of our board and the enthusiasm of the entire team, we began building a new product in October around this concept and are feeling good about its potential. At the same time, we’ve kept Meerkat running and stable and plan to monitor the network for anything that begins to draw new attention.

FLICKR

YAHOO / TUMBLR

Yahoo introduces its own Yahoo ESports Hub, providing live coverage of competitive gaming events and producing video content under the Yahoo Sports banner.

PEACH

FOURSQUARE

GENERAL

Amazon Fire recall (UK / Ireland)

UNCONFIRMED…

EE & 02 have started without notice to charge you for adding emojis onto your text, and billing you up to 40p a go as a MMS message.

You won't be charged if it's sent via iMessage or whatsapp but the only way to stop your iphone from converting a message automatically into a MMS is to go into settings and turn MMS off on your iPhones.

Let your friends know as I reckon there's going to be some huge bills received until people realise.

Do you like our podcast? Who had been hospitalised? It turns out a third marketing person, Daniel had emailed me and somewhere along the lines I had assumed the wrong person. What a day. Due to the delays reaching Brighton I couldn’t see Jodie, so I’m hoping to see her in a couple of weeks time.

Remember Ghostbusters? The new trailer is out and it gives nothing away

Product Updates

Social Scheduler

New Relic - Startup pricing AWS micro $17

Instagram mobile app - started Monday (originally said Tuesday), 1 1/2 days before falling ill!

Email users when errors sending messages, or when oAuth token problems, or an account is coming up for expiry.

Google+ integration also starting in parallel - awaiting approval (bad, bad, bad form!)

Marketing Efforts

Discussions with multiple Marketing consultants, to see whether there’s any way we can partner up with marketing specialists.

Progress on this?…

Next week I plan to look at email marketing tools, in particular drip-marketing campaigns

Onboarding - how to complete registration, how to add your social media accounts, how to schedule your first message, bulk-uploading, etc

Upgrade free to basic / pro

Emails to ask for feedback when someone cancels / deletes a social scheduler account

Other Work

SOCIAL MEDIA NEWS

Facebook has a hidden chess game, you can invoke it by typing @fbchess play when you’re in a conversation, but you have to type text commands for everything.

Facebook Messenger optionally gift-wrapped your Valentine messages.

Facebook are creating image recognition technology to create high resolution population density maps (to within 10m), using neural networks trained to quickly determine whether or not buildings were present or not in satellite images. The purpose is to enable Facebook to determine which areas need better internet access, what technologies would work best and could help with disaster handling too.

Mark Zuckerberg made a surprise appearance at the Samsung Galaxy S7 keynote to explain how putting a VR headset on can be social, he said "Pretty soon, we're going to live in a world where everyone has the power to share and experience whole scenes, as if we're there in person”, he also announced the creation of a dedicated VR team - although Devology mentioned this a few weeks ago in our news!

Facebook make Gear VR videos clearer and faster to load, by using ‘dynamic streaming’ resulting in VR videos that are higher quality and more data efficient on the lightweight device. "Dynamic streaming" requires Facebook to process and store all of its videos in multiple resolutions. It only shows the best version for the spot you're actually looking at -- the rest is a lower resolution file that's automatically swapped out as you look left and right. The actions people take on Facebook—liking, clicking, commenting or sharing a post—are historically some of the main factors considered to determine what to show at the top of your News Feed. But these factors don’t always tell us the whole story of what is most meaningful to you.

As part of our ongoing effort to improve News Feed, we ask over a thousand people to rate their experience every day and tell us how we can improve the content they see when they check Facebook — we call this our Feed Quality Panel. We also survey tens of thousands of people around the world each day to learn more about how well we’re ranking each person’s feed. We ask people to rate each story from one to five stars in response to the question “how much did you want to see this story in your News Feed?” From this research using a representative sample of people, we are able to better understand which stories people would be interested in seeing near the top of their News Feed even if they choose not to click, like or comment on them — and use this information to make ranking changes.

We saw through our research that people reported having a better News Feed experience when the stories they see at the top are stories they are both likely to rate highly if asked and likely to engage with.

We are making an update to News Feed that combines these two signals. News Feed will begin to look at both the probability that you would want to see the story at the top of your feed and the probability that you will like, comment on, click or share a story. We will rank stories higher in feed which we think people might take action on, and which people might want to see near the top of their News Feed.

How will this affect my Page?

The impact of these changes on a story’s distribution will vary depending on the composition of your audience and your posting activity. In general this update should not impact reach or referral traffic meaningfully for the majority of Pages; however, some Pages may see some increases in referral traffic, and some Pages may see some declines in referral traffic. Pages might see some declines in referral traffic if the rate at which their stories are clicked on does not match how much people report wanting to see those stories near the top of their News Feed. This update helps rebalance those two factors, so people are seeing relevant stories to them.

In general, Pages should avoid encouraging people to take an action (such as encouraging lots of clicks), because this will likely only cause temporary spikes in metrics that might then be rebalanced by feed’s ranking over time. As this change takes effect, we’ll be learning about what possible factors or posting strategies may lead to increases or declines in referral traffic, and we are committed to communicating with our partners about those findings. Look for updates at our News Feed Best Practices page, and in the News, Media and Publishing Facebook group. Overall, Pages should continue to post things that your audience finds meaningful and continue using our Page post best practices.”

Facebook’s WhatsApp messenger hits 1 billion monthly users!

Almost one in seven people on Earth use Facebook's $19 billion messaging application

1 Billion active users

42 Billion messages a day

1.6 Billion photos shared a day

1 billion groups

53 languages supported

250 million videos shared per day

57 engineers

TWITTER / PERISCOPE

Social Scheduler was reporting a much higher than usual bounce rate of messages, where Twitter rejected our scheduled messages. As it turned out Twitter was at fault and was down for a large number of users. I could post the update to Facebook and LinkedIn, but of course I couldn’t let you know through Twitter. After reading “Hatching Twitter”, it was evident that all the while Jack was CEO he didn’t deal with reliability very well and it was one contributing factor why he was ousted. Is it just coincidence that he is back as CEO and the reliability has gone downhill? ;-)

Dick Costolo, a former CEO of Twitter has announced that he’s starting a new business, with some software that ‘re-imagines the path to personal fitness’. Interestingly he didn’t announce it in 140 characters or less, he cheated… by taking two screenshots on the iPhone of his Notes app.

He said (refer to photos, or )…

Tesco, Sky, and Xbox among the first brand partners to test Promoted Moments in the UK

In December, Moments launched in the UK as a new experience that surfaces the very best of Twitter through images, videos, and conversations. Think about it: SMS and texting came to the fore in the time of flip phones. Now, many of us can do so much more on our phones; we went from just making phone calls and sending basic text-only messages to having computers in our pockets. And just like the flip phone is disappearing, old communication styles are disappearing too. With Messenger, we offer all the things that made texting so popular, but also so much more. Governments have a responsibility to protect people and their privacy. We believe a legal framework can protect both. Put the two together, and you've got the makings of an events juggernaut.

"We realized that we hadn't really built a product that was for public events," says Koolwal.
